ELIZABETH CITY

KUCHIN TAKES CHARGE: Capt. Joseph T. Kuchin took command of the National Strike Force Coordination Center in a ceremony Monday, replacing Capt. David B. Pascoe.

NSFCC is a 42-member Coast Guard unit established in Elizabeth City in 1991. It is one of four units that make up the Coast Guard's National Strike Force that responds to environmental emergencies such as oil spills.

The NSFCC is located about two miles north of Elizabeth City.

FREE WATER ACTIVITY FOR YOUTHS: The Museum of the Albemarle and the Elizabeth City Chamber are sponsoring ``Sailing on the River'' for children of all ages from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, at the museum.

The free, public program includes activities on water safety and exploring different sailing watercraft such as a Sunfish, Com-pac 16, canoe, and Moth boat.

DARE COUNTY

INTERPRETERS GROUP MEET: The Outer Banks Interpreters Group will meet at Jockey's Ridge State Park for a breakfast meeting on June 18, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Interpreters will tour the completed visitor center at Jockey's Ridge and discuss the recent seasonal training program.

CAMP OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH: The Dare County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service is offering opportunities for youth to go to camp. Local camps include 4-H Community Camps, School Age Children's Camp and Endless Summer day camps. Youth may also choose to travel to Mitchell 4-H Center near Swansboro, June 22 through 27. The registration fee is $200.

For youths 5 to 12 years of age, Community Camps will be held June 16 through 20. These camp sites will operate north of Oregon Inlet during the first week after school. School Age Children's Camp will start June 23, ending Aug. 15 and will be held at Manteo Elementary and First Flight Elementary. June 23 through Aug. 1 camp will be held at Kitty Hawk Elementary, and at the Munchkin Academy from June 16 through Aug. 15.

Camps will operate 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., daily, except July 4. There will be field trips and a focus on drama, nutrition, art, music and science.

Endless Summer Day Camp, for youth entering grades 6 through 8, will operate at Manteo Middle School and First Flight Middle School from June 30 through Aug. 8, except for July 4. Camp hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Through a Community Based Alternatives grant, the cost for Endless Summer Camp is $15 per week with a $10 registration fee. The grant also is providing scholarships for qualifying youth.

KITTY HAWK

GUEST MINISTER: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks will welcome the Rev. Anne Buehler, currently the interim minister of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Nashville, Tenn., as guest minister for its service on Sunday, at 11 a.m., at the intersection of Kitty Hawk Road and Herbert Perry Road in Kitty Hawk Village.

MANTEO

AUTHOR TO READ: Janet Sylvester, winner of the Grolier Prize and a PEN Discovery award, will read from her work at Manteo Booksellers on Friday at 7 p.m. She will introduce her newest book of poems, ``The Mark of Flesh'' and answer questions about the craft of writing.

Sylvester, whose work has appeared in national poetry journals and the ``Best American Poetry'' anthology, teaches in the Creative Writing program at the University of South Carolina. She formerly taught at Old Dominion and Radford Universities in Virginia.

ARTS COUNCIL HOLDS ARTISTS SHOWING: The Dare County Arts Council is holding its third Member Artists Showing at their gallery at milepost 11, Central Square in Nags Head.

Included in this showing is photography, a variety of watercolors, batik, and mixed media pieces. All pieces in the gallery are for sale by the artists.
