It's too late to catch Adam Schultz in high school soccer action. But for Kempsville opponents, that has always been the case.
If the William and Mary-bound senior midfielder was known for anything aside from great soccer skills, it was acceleration - a split-second quickness that made him a blink-and-miss problem for opposing defenders. Schultz was always a threat to make something happen.
In leading the Chiefs to the Group AAA state title, he did plenty of that.
``If I ever wanted to know what Kempsville was going to do, all I had to do was watch Adam for about the first three minutes,'' said Cox coach Jim Snodgrass, who knows Schultz as well as anybody - having coached him in select club soccer and against him the last four years.
Schultz finished this season with eight goals and 11 assists, but it was more what he did for his teammates that earned him the Virginian-Pilot's All-Tidewater Player of the Year honor for the second straight year.
The award gave Schultz a sweep of Player of the Year honors: All-Group AAA, All-Eastern Region and All-Beach District.
``I owe all this success to a lot of people,'' Schultz said. ``Myself for all the hard work, (coach Kevin Denson) and all my teammates. They've all had an impact on the things I was able to do.''
The rest of the first team:
Joey Moriarty: Kempsville's big gun up front, the senior striker led team with 19 goals and five assists. Showed an incredible knack of being in the right place at the right time. An all-state and all-region pick, he'll continue his career at Christopher Newport University.
Pat Kilkenny: Falcons senior forward had 12 goals, but will most likely be remembered for his hat trick in sudden-death semifinal victory over Herndon. First team all-region and all-state.
Landon Moore: Churchland senior forward tied with Moriarty in area scoring honors with 19 goals. The Eastern District Player of the Year also had seven assists. An all-region first teamer and second team all-state, he'll attend Virginia as a walk-on.
Kevin Knott: Kempsville senior midfielder who finished with 10 goals and 10 assists will join Schultz at William and Mary. The first team all-region and all-stater also joins Schultz as the only All-Tidewater first-team repeater.
Steve Collett: Western Branch's senior midfielder was unanimous pick for Southeastern District Player of the Year honor after scoring 14 goals and five assists. He was first team all-region and second team all-state.
Parker Consaul: Maury senior midfielder finished with eight goals and four assists and was the field general for a Commodore team that got further into the playoffs than ever before. Made first team all-region, second team all-state.
Robby O'Donnell: First Colonial's senior sweeper finished his career with six goals and 16 assists - good numbers for a defender. Known for his trouble-causing throw-ins when the Patriots were in scoring range.
Michael Glover: Maury starter for four years and the backbone of a defense that allowed only 14 goals. Advanced to the Eastern Region as a tennis player and was recruited to kick for the JMU football team.
Coran Newton: Lakeland sweeper/stopper was forced into the keeper role against Great Bridge in a 6-0 loss that could have been much worse. He made 20 saves. Will attend Virginia Tech.
Colin Kiber: At 6-foot-4, the Cox keeper has the size and skills to make it in college soccer. An all-state choice, he allowed only 16 goals (five in state tournament) and recorded 11 shutouts. He'll try to walk on at Virginia Tech. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
