Suffolk parents interested in having their children screened for the public schools Early Start program for the 1997-98 school year can call Jacquelin D. Marshall, instruction coordinator, or Cindy Chavis at 925-5500 for details and to schedule interviews.

Early Start is a program for disadvantaged children who turn 4 by Sept. 30 and need early or additional help to get ready for kindergarten. VIRGINIA BEACH

Virginia Wesleyan College will hold a scholarship competition for graduates of Tidewater Community College next month. Winners could receive scholarships covering up to half the cost of Wesleyan's tuition for two years.

The competition will be held July 16. Participants also will be able to talk to members of Wesleyan's faculty and financial aid staff.

The Portsmouth School Board's June meeting dates have been changed. The board's work session is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. June 19. Its regular meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. June 26.

Meetings typically are held in City Council Chambers, on the sixth floor of the City Hall Building downtown.
