Retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Nelson S. Richard, 53, died June 12, 1997, at his home after a brief struggle with cancer.
Master Chief Richard was born July 26, 1943, in Walhalla, S.C., and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Richard. He served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years and after retirement he worked for the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 5, Norfolk.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Carmen G. Richard; four daughters, Manuela Kirkland, Maria Hobbs, Dolores Garcia and Juana Richard; two sons, Francisco Barroso and Edward Richard; sister, Juanita Burdette; seven grandchildren.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and will certainly be missed.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and from 5 p.m. until the service time at 7:30 p.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach. Interment will follow Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513.
