Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Nelson ``Shy Brown'' White Sr., of the 1700 block of Oakfield Ave., died June 13, 1997.
A veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, he also retired from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
A native of the Berkley section of Norfolk, he was the son of the late William H. and Ella Hathaway White. He was renowned for his play at shortshop for the Berkley Black Sox baseball team of the 1920s and '30s. A lover of Berkley history, he had a special interest in Magnolia Cemetery, where he beautified grave sites for families each Memorial Day.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma R. White of the home; two daughters, Shirley W.S. Nottingham of Chesapeake and Althea W. Joyner of Norfolk; six sons, Nelson White Jr., Robert White, Clarence White, Thomas White and Kenneth White, all of Norfolk, and Anthony White of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Darius D. White of Burlington, N.J.; 34 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in New Central Baptist Church, Berkley, by the Rev. James A. Missick. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family will receive guests 6 to 7 p.m. today at Pretlow & Sons Funeral Home. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
