BERNARD J. MATTHEWS

Bernard Jackson Matthews, 59, of the 3300 block of Hemlock Drive, died June 15, 1997, in his residence.

He was the vice president for the Bank of Hampton Roads. He was an active member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, trustee and monitory, as well as serving on various committees in his church and the Portsmouth Baptist Association. He was a member of Churchland Masonic Lodge (NU)276, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies and Mount Horeb Royal Arch Chapter (NU)11.

Mr. Matthews was the son of the late Jeannie W. Matthews and Gladys S. Matthews. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Ann Pendleton Matthews; two sons, Bernard G. Matthews and his wife, Brenda, of Portsmouth and Michael Matthews of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Justin W. Matthews and Jessica N. Matthews; three brothers, Steve Matthews and Melvin Matthews, both of Portsmouth, and James Matthews of Suffolk. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Martin Matthews, and a sister, Cecil Jean Matthews Houghton.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Jackson Memorial Baptist Church by Dr. Albert A. Peverall Jr. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Jackson Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 4316 Bruce Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23321. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
