ALEXANDER A. SMITH JR.

Alexander Alley Smith Jr., 70, died June 15, 1997, in his home.

Born May 5, 1927, in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Alexander and Helen Vaughan Smith.

Mr. Smith served with the U.S. Air Force from 1946 through 1949. He earned a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering and worked in that profession for the U.S. Government. He had lived in St. Mary's County for the last 47 years and was a member of the Church of the Ascension, Lexington Park.

Survivors include his wife, the former Ethel Sinclair Johnson; three daughters, Jan Havens of Nashville, Allison Marie Smith of Chesapeake and Melanie Smith Harer of Minnetonka, Minn.; sister, Helen Campbell of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension, Lexington Park. The Rev. Rona R. Harding, rector, will officiate at the services. Interment will follow in St. Andrew's Church Cemetery, California.
