WATSON AND JENKINS PROMOTED AT BANK: Life Savings Bank promoted Willis E. Watson to vice president and David B. Jenkins to assistant vice president. Watson, who joined Life Savings as a result of a merger between Life Savings and Seaboard Savings Bank in 1996, was formerly controller and chief financial officer at Seaboard. Jenkins was the bank's network administrator.
BULLINGTON TAKES INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS CHAIR: J.R. Bullington, director of the Center for Global Business and Executive Education at Old Dominion University, was named chairman of the International Business Council of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. Before coming to ODU in 1993, he was a career diplomat and U.S. ambassador, with extensive service in Asia and Africa as well as at the State Department in Washington, D.C.
DOWNTOWN NORFOLK COUNCIL TO HONOR TWO LEADERS: The Downtown Norfolk Council will honor two leaders at its annual membership meeting June 25 at the Omni Waterside Hotel. Dr. Larry Whitworth, president of Tidewater Community College, will be honored as the 1997 Downtowner of the Year. He has been instrumental in the development of the downtown Norfolk campus of TCC. Also, James E. Gehman, vice president of the architectural and engineering firm of Glenn & Sadler, will receive the Roy Badgley Distinguished Service Award. Gehman is active in numerous volunteer organizations and has been a part of revitalization efforts in downtown.

SENATOR EARLEY RECOGNIZED BY URBAN PARTNERSHIP: The Urban Partnership, a coalition of business and government leaders from 18 localities across the state, recently honored Sen. Mark Earley, R-Chesapeake, for support of the Partnership's efforts. He was recognized for his commitment to regional cooperation and urban revitalization as well as his successful sponsorship of the Regional Competitiveness Act and economic growth sharing legislation in 1996 in the Senate.

VALUJET ADDS ROUND-TRIP FLIGHT: ValuJet Airlines will add a fourth round-trip flight from Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport to Atlanta beginning July 10. The new flight brings ValuJet service at Newport News/Williamsburg back to levels of one year ago before the airline was grounded under pressure from the Federal Aviation Administration. A ValuJet plane crashed into the Everglades in May 1996 killing 110 people. From Atlanta, passengers can connect to 22 destinations in the ValuJet system.

ROWE FURNITURE REPORTS EARNINGS: Rowe Furniture Corp., a McLean-based manufacturer of upholstered furniture, reported earnings for the three months ended June 1, 1997, of $1.69 million, or $0.13 per share, up from $1.33 million or 10 cents per share in the three months ended June 2, 1996.
