January A. Mention, 19, of Chestnut Ave., passed away Monday, June 16, 1997, at Riverside Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was living at home with her parents, Sandra J. Mention and Paul X. Robinson; her sister, Nicole Jo Mention; and her brother, Ryan Paul Mention. She was preceded in death by her natural father, Jerome E. Mention Sr.
Jan was born Jan. 24, 1978, in Compton, Calif., and resided in Los Angeles until November 1987. She attended McKinley Ave. Elementary School in Los Angeles, Emily Brittan Elementary School in Butler, Pa., and South Morrison Elementary and Hines Middle School in Newport News. After graduating from Menchville High School as an honor student in 1996, she attended Radford University, where she completed her freshman year on the dean's list. Jan majored in English and intended to enter Christopher Newport University in the fall and eventually study law.
January's grandparents are Barbara J. Elder and the late Deford N. Elder of Butler, Pa., and the late George and Alberta Sneed Mention of Beaver Falls, Pa. Her aunts and uncles are Karen and Robert Balas of Chesapeake, Rick and Kathy Elder, Debra and William Fleeger, all of Butler, Pa., Roberta and Joe Williams of Compton, Calif., Willie and Izora Mention of New Brighton, Pa., Jean Spigner of Youngstown, Ohio, the late Ruby Snowden of Beaver Falls, Pa., the late Alonzo Mention of Texas and the late Delores A. Mosley of Hampton; her half-brothers include Tyrone E. Mention, Robbie Mention, Charles Mention, all of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jerome Mention Jr. of Tustin, Calif.; her half sisters, Katrina Mincy and Linda Adams of Cincinnati.
She will be fondly missed by her best friend, Kenyatta Joyner of Newport News, cousins, relatives, friends and her numerous pen pals throughout the world. May those who remember her take strength and inspiration from her strong will and determination to succeed. She will live on in the hearts and memories of all who have known her.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Hampton. Viewing will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel.
