PIANIST, VOCALIST AWARDED LOCAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

A pianist from Western Branch High School and a vocalist from Churchland High School have received several Portsmouth scholarship awards to further their musical studies.

Andrew Sobel, son of Elizabeth Sobel of Chesapeake, was named recipient of the Lancaster Scholarship of $1,400 from the Portsmouth Music Study Club and the Edith Heely Scholarship of $500 from the Cradock Music Club.

Sobel, a graduate of Western Branch High School, will continue his studies at Oberlin College.

Julie Lynn Perkins, daughter of Elsie Perkins of Portsmouth, received a $400 talent award from the Portsmouth club and a $200 talent award from the Cradock club. She also was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Portsmouth Museum and Fine Arts Commission.

A graduate of Churchland High School, she will attend the University of Virginia.

The music club awards were made on the basis of auditions held several weeks apart. Each club had a different panel of three judges, and each panel chose the same winners.

``Each of these students is incredibly talented,'' said Harriet Heath, a retired public school music teacher and a member of the music clubs. ``It's not surprising that both panels of judges chose them.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photos
