The Eastern District excellence of Churchland's boys soccer team was rewarded handsomely in the all-district balloting, as the Truckers swept player, coach and newcomer of the year honors while placing five players on the first team.
Landon Mooore, Stowe Buntz, John Powers, Stevie Hughes and Craig Hooker were chosen among the district's top 12 players. Duke Conrad, who led Churchland to the district championship and the regional semifinals before they lost to eventual state champion Kempsville, earned the coach of the year award.
Wilson, which qualified for postseason play for the first time in the team's history, added two first-teamers - Ade Patton and Josh Lashbrook - and had the league's top newcomer in Maurice Morgan.
Churchland senior Landon Moore was named player of the year. Moore scored 19 goals, tops in the area with Kempsville's Joey Moriarty, and chipped in seven assists. He was named first-team all-region and All-Tidewater, and second-team all-state.
Senior midfielder Buntz, a first-team all-region and second-team All-Tidewater and all-state selection, scored five goals and led the Truckers with 12 assists, while Hughes, a junior midfielder, contributed four goals and six assists. Powers, a junior defender, and Hooker, a senior keeper, spearheaded a Churchland defense that stymied district opponents all season. Hooker was credited with nine shutouts.
Patton, a senior sweeper, served as the on-field leader for the Presidents, who improved from one win a year ago to eight last season under first-year coach Craig Bell. Also one of the most academically gifted athletes in South Hampton Roads, Patton's grade-point average is well over 4.0, and he joins Churchland's Moore as a member of the academic all-region team.
Lashbrook, a sophomore forward, supplied key scoring punch for the Presidents, as he finished with 10 goals and seven assists.
GIRLS SOCCER
Siw Eikrem, Kat Crandall and Bev Frias represented Churchland on the first all-district team.
Eikrem, a skilled Norwegian who also earned rookie of the year honors, tied for the team high in goals with eight and was key along with Crandall in helping the Presidents control the midfield.
Crandall, who was also a first-team all-Southeastern District pick a year ago, sacrificed her own offense to become more of a playmaker and organize the midfield for coach Biff Andrews.
Frias, all five feet of her, terrorized opposing forwards with her aggressive, non-stop approach to defense.
``She's tough as nails,'' Andrews said.
