RUSSELL H. SMITH

Russell Hughes Smith, husband of the late Josephine McAlexander Smith, died on June 19, 1997, in Richmond. Mr. Smith was born on Oct. 16, 1900, in Rochester, Ind., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Winfred Ebenezer Smith.

After graduating from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and attending the University of Illinois, for many years he worked as a dealer representative for the Ford Motor Co. in the Midwest and Eastern United States. Before World War II, he joined Door Engineering Corp in Norfolk, where he spent the war years.

In 1947, he became owner and president of J.S. Archer Co., an industrial door distributorship in Richmond, and he remained in this position until his retirement in 1985.

A successful businessman, Mr. Smith also enjoyed fishing and hunting, and for many years was recognized as one of the best recreational striped bass fishermen on the Rappahannock River. He was a member of the Richmond Rotary Club and the Country Club of Virginia.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Lawrence Smith of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Linda Smith Ferneyhough of Lynchburg; four grandsons, Stephens Alexander Smith, Russell Lawrence Smith, and Geoffrey Hughes Smith, all of Virginia Beach; and James Goss Ferneyhough III of Georgetown, Del.; a great-grandson, Andrew Lawrence Smith of Virginia Beach.

A private graveside service will be held. Interment will be at the Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Marine Science Museum or a charity of the donor's choice.
