Juan Weaver Spann, 61, died June 19, 1997.
Juan was born in Nashville, Tenn. The son of the late John Arthur Spann and Lena Locke Spann, he was an active member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, holding many key positions - none more satisfying than teaching fifth and sixth graders in Sunday School for 17 years. He was a life member of United Methodist Men.
A recipient of the Purple Heart, Juan served 25 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He served as an Airborne Ranger in the 101st Airborne Division for two tours of duty in Vietnam. He felt his most rewarding assignment with the military to be that of military science/R.O.T.C. instructor for the Corp of Cadets at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Juan spent the last 10 years serving as the executive director of the Eastern Region of the Association of General Contractors of Virginia.
Mr. Spann is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patti R. Spann; a daughter, Patricia Malinda Connell, and her husband, John R. Connell, and a grandson, Matthew ``Hew'' Spann Connell, all of Portsmouth. He is also survived by a brother, William C. Spann of Hermitage, Tenn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert F. and Polly Spann of Old Hickory, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Mrs. J. Arthur Spann Jr. of Nashville; a brother-in-law, Thomas A. Lundborg Jr. of Antioch, Tenn.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Brice Cole of Ooltewah, Tenn; a father-in-law, O.W. Winningham of Collegedale, Tenn.; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Spann was preceded in death by a brother, John Arthur Spann Jr.; a twin sister, Juanita Spann Lundborg; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. O.W. Winningham. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and loyal friend.
A church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church by Dr. Paul C. Bailey, Dr. Eugene R. Woolridge and the Rev. David Ford. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashville, with full military honors.
The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Virginia Beach United Methodist Church Building Fund, 207 18th St., Virginia Beach, Va. 23451 or the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, Va. 23517.
