AS SUMMER lumbers on, produce departments are bulging with crops just starting to come into season.
Almost as eagerly awaited as locally grown tomatoes are cherries from Washington state. This week brings the beginning of cherry season with the dark red, sweet Bing variety on the shelves. Look for the yellow-tinged Rainier cherries to arrive later this month.
Also just beginning to arrive are fresh apricots.
Other produce specials for this week include: cantaloupes for 96 cents each and cucumbers at three for 99 cents at Farm Fresh. Bananas are three pounds for $1 and 5-pound bags of russet potatoes are 99 cents at Be-Lo.
Food Lion has five ears of yellow sweet corn for $1. Farmer Jack is offering Driscoll's strawberries and seedless grapes for 97 cents a pound. Rack & Sack and 3 Stores 1 Roof are featuring peaches, 29 cents a pound; red or black plums, 59 cents a pound; and Virginia-grown green beans, 59 cents a pound.
In the meat and seafood sections, look for split fryer breasts for 98 cents a pound, corned beef brisket for $1.98 a pound and pork picnics for 68 cents a pound at Rack & Sack and 3 Stores 1 Roof.
Farmer Jack has boneless bottom round roast for $1.26 a pound and ground beef for 97 cents a pound with a 3-pound minimum purchase. Be-Lo stores are offering quarter-loin pork chops for $1.79 a pound, Richfood meat franks for $1.19 a pound, fresh pan trout for $1.99 a pound and flounder fillets for $2.99 a pound.
Boneless N.Y. strip steaks are $3.98 a pound, boneless veal roast is $2.99 a pound, Western-style pork ribs are $1.39 a pound and large bay scallops are $3.59 a pound at Farm Fresh.
For easier summer cooking look for these specials: Rack & Sack and 3 Stores 1 Roof have 12-packs of 12-ounce Pepsi products for $1.97 each (limit four); Breyers ice cream half gallons are two for $5 at Food Lion, and Farmer Jack has 37.5-square-foot rolls of heavy-duty Reynolds Wrap for $1.19. ON THE SHELF
Looking for something sweet? How about something savory? Regardless of your tastebuds' desire, Lawry's has a ``30-Minute Marinade'' to satisfy it.
These fruit juice-based marinades are ready to pour over chicken, seafood, pork, beef or vegetables and are available in 11 flavors.
Two of the most recent additions are Caribbean Jerk With Papaya Juice (you can see the little pepper seeds floating around) and Hickory With Apple Cider (a sweetly heady concoction that we found to be especially good on ribs).
A 12-ounce bottle costs about $2.69. Assistant Karen Santos contributed to this report. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
