DERWOOD E. GALLOP SR.

Retired Capt. Derwood E. Gallop Sr., 81, died June 24, 1997.

He was born in Camden County, and was raised and educated in Portsmouth. He was the son of the late Melissia Daugh Gallop and John Harrison Gallop. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Shop 72, where he served as supervisor and head of the Service Group Training Section. He served as a loft rigger, deep-sea diver and was the diving instructor for many years. He served as captain of the Navy Yard Divers Boat, also the YTLs (tugs) and the offshore underwater survey vessel, ``The Listener.''

Upon retiring he went to work as captain for the state of North Carolina on the long-range ferries running from Ocracoke to Cedar Island and then from Ocracoke to Swan Quarter and retired from the the state of North Carolina. He also served as commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve while in the shipyard, he served as head of riggers for many years and was also a past president of the the East Coast Navy Yard Riggers. He served as president of the Fifth Naval District Metal Trades Council, the East Coast Metal Trades Council and Navy Committees in the Shipyard. He was a member of the Currituck Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, New Bern, the York Rite Bodies of Elizabeth City and a member of the Shrine, Sudan Temple, New Bern. He was very active in his community. He was a member of the Cradock United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, but has been attending The Assembly of God Church, Grandy.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Bunch Gallop; daughter, Joyce Barkel of Holland, Mich.; and a son, Derwood E. Gallop Jr. of Chesapeake; sister, Martha Annarino of Asheville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be conducted in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, with Masonic rites Friday, June 27, 1997, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Douglas Harn officiating. A visitation will be held for family and friends in Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge, Chesapeake, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and at all other times at his residence. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
