J. Stanley Peel, 64, of the 1100 block of Park Drive, died Thursday morning, June 26, 1997.
He was a native of Everetts, N.C., and the son of the late Dillon Charlie and Lou Allie Taylor Peel. Mr. Peel was retired from Wachovia Bank as senior vice president of the Elizabeth City office, having joined Wachovia Bank in 1960 and retiring in 1995. Mr. Peel was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was past chairman of the administrative board, past district lay leader, past chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee and currently was treasurer of the Elizabeth City District of the United Methodist Churches.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He was a member and past president of the Elizabeth City Kiwanis Club and a member of the E.C. Rotary Club. He was a former chairman of the advisory board for the Salvation Army and the Elizabeth City Foundation Inc. Mr. Peel served on the board of trustees for E.C. State University and was past chairman for the university foundation board; vice chairman of the College of the Albemarle Foundation Board; former member and chairman of the local John Motley Morehead Selection Committee; member of the board of directors for the Educational Foundation, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and most recently, chairman of the Marine Science Board of U.N.C. at Chapel Hill.
Mr. Peel was active in civic affairs of Elizabeth City, where he served as president and board member of the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce in 1972 and 1973; past chairman of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Committee of 100; was voted Boss of the Year in 1975 and 1980 through E.C. Jaycees. He was past president and drive chairman of the Albemarle United Way. He served on the board of directors for the Pasquotank Arts Council, Museum of the Albemarle and Elizabeth City Downtown Inc.
Mr. Peel is survived by his wife, Judith Whitehurst Peel of the home; two daughters, Melanie Peel Dunford of Chesapeake and Lou Ellen Peel of Elizabeth City; sister, Anna P. Bolick of Conover, N.C.; and brother, Charles Taylor Peel of Durham.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday in First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. by the Rev. E.M. Thompson and the Rev. Josh MacKenzie. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations to the Salvation Army of Elizabeth City, First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
