CARL J. GRIFFIN JR.

Carl J. Griffin Jr. passed from life to eternity June 25, 1997, in Portsmouth.

A supervisor of the design department at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a naval architect, he retired in 1975. He was a Newport News native and attended Great Bridge United Methodist Church. He was a member of The Society of Professional Naval Engineers; National Association of Naval Technical Supervisors; past master, Washington-Lafayette Masonic Lodge No. 176; and the Portsmouth Artists Guild. He was known for his oil portraits, silhouettes, character sketches and watercolor painting. He was a USMC veteran of World War II, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1937 1/2, attended the University of Virginia, where he received a special certificate in engineering in 1956.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Bradshaw Griffin; two daughters, Carla G. Ross of Jacksonville, N.C., and Sharon G. Silling of Charlottesville, Va.; three stepsons, Alfred Bradshaw and Robbie Bradshaw, both of Chesapeake, and Ronald Bradshaw of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Rose Kittrell of Portsmouth, Elsie C. Fehlhaber of Red Bank, N.J., and Willis Fox of Luray, Va.; two brothers, Richard Griffin of Suffolk and Ernest Griffin of Portsmouth; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Robert Hastings. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will be in the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. to receive friends. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
