FIREWORKS WARNING: The Dare County Sheriff's Office and Fire Marshal's Office have received numerous calls reporting the use of illegal fireworks throughout the county, particularly on the beaches. When dry conditions exist, officials said, the possibility of brush fires increases. It is important for residents and visitors to be aware that certain types of fireworks are both dangerous and illegal.
Under state law, the possession and use of certain types of fireworks is illegal. If found guilty, it is possible to receive a fine of up to $500 and six months in jail.
The following locations have scheduled professional fireworks displays for this Fourth of July:
Manteo Waterfront, 9 p.m.
Hatteras Island, Ferry Dock, 8:30 p.m.
Nags Head, Bonnett Street Beach Access, 9:25 p.m.
Kill Devil Hills, Avalon Pier, 9 p.m.
MANTEO
LEGION OFFICERS INSTALLED: The following American Legion Post 26 Officers were sworn in on June 3 in Manteo by retired Navy Cmdr. Frank J. Wikenheiser: Commander, Robert Maher; 1st Vice Commander, Ed Bryan; 2nd Vice Commander, Hoyt Hill; Adjutant, Carl Parrot; Service Officer, Charles ``Smokey'' Broughton; Finance Officer, Carlton Smith; Historian, Arthur Riley; Chaplain, James S. Gabriel; Sergeant at Arms, Joseph F. Thank.
Also installed on June 3 were officers of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 26. Louella Stollings, N.C. District president, swore in: President, Mary Ellen Maher; Vice President, Mary Hill; Treasurer/Membership Chairman, Mary Ellen Hawthorne; Secretary, Marjorie Keys; Chaplain, Doris Guard; Sergeant at Arms, Margaret Rendine; Historian, Ellen Ward.
NAGS HEAD
DEDICATION WEDNESDAY: Formal dedication of the Nags Head Little Bridge Access Site Facility will take place at noon Wednesday during the regular meeting of the Nags Head Board of Commissioners. The project is a joint venture by the town of Nags Head, the DOT, and the Dare County Tourist Bureau.
JAYCEE PRESIDENT: Chris Holland has been installed as the 45th president of the Elizabeth City Jaycees.
Holland, a Jaycee for three years, has held both the individual vice president and management vice president positions over the past two years.
The other Jaycee officers installed are: Hall Chappell, Frank Kohler, William Johnson and Connie Albertson, vice presidents,; Denise Jones, state director; Ed Bailey, treasurer; Bill Jones, secretary; Rick Durren and Eddie Stuart, directors.

APPLEBEE'S: The Applebee's Division of Apple South Inc., a multi-concept restaurant company and the nation's largest operator of Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants, opened its first Elizabeth City Applebee's on Tuesday at 611 S. Hughes Blvd.
Each Applebee reflects the unique flavor of the neighborhood in which it is located through the display of memorabilia, photos, and newspaper and magazine articles highlighting hometown heroes, local schools and local history.
The new 4,370-square-foot Applebee's restaurant will employ about 75 people.
During the grant opening, Applebee's employees and guests contributed $1,550 in donations to benefit the local Boys and Girls Club of Elizabeth City.
BELVIDERE
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS SPECIALISTS INTERNATIONAL: Environmental Hazards Specialists International, Inc. received award of contract to perform ordnance and explosives investigation and removal work in the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Established in 1988, EHSI is a small business, owned by women, and headquartered at Belvidere. EHSI has safely and successfully performed over 75,000 accident-free hours at more than 70 government and commercial sites contaminated with ordnance and explosives.
