60 LOCAL RE-ENACTORS EXPECTED TO TAKE PART

THE SOUND and fury of war will echo across the Gettysburg countryside again over the Fourth of July weekend as re-enactors again replay - without the bullets, without the dying - portions of the battle that many regard as the turning point of the Civil War.

One of the units wearing the Confederate butternut gray will be the 1st North Carolina Volunteers (later 11th North Carolina Troops), which draws its modern membership from eastern North Carolina and the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. About 60 people are expected to make the trip to eastern Pennsylvania.

Re-enactors from both North and South will focus on three ``forgotten'' battles of Gettysburg: John Buford's stand against A.P. Hill that gained and held the high ground for the Federals on the first day; the subsequent fight around the railroad cut west of town; and the second-day battle of the Peach Orchard, where Pete Longstreet's Rebels, raked much of the day by Union artillery, finally overran Dan Sickles' salient - and then ran out of steam.

The re-enactments will not beon the actually sites - that is prohibited by law - but will be done where the movie ``Gettysburg'' was filmed about 5 miles south of town on Pumping Station Road.
