Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Richard Burnside Buffington, 75, died July 1, 1997, at his home.
Born in Providence, R.I., he was a retired naval aviator with 27 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, and a member of the Retired Officers Association.
Among decorations Lt. Cmdr. Buffington received during his career were the Navy Air Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with a star, American Campaign and World War II Medal.
He was an honor graduate of the University of Mississippi and received his master's degree in education from Old Dominion University. After retirement from the Navy he worked for the Norfolk School System and later retired as assistant state supervisor, Employment Training Service of the Virginia Department of Education, Richmond. During his career with the state of Virginia he served as president of Manpower Teachers Association of Virginia and as vice president of the the Virginia Vocational Association.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lucille B. Buffington of Virginia Beach; three sons, Richard B. Buffington II of Charleston, S.C., Robert S. Buffington and his wife, Jeanne, of Virginia Beach and William R. Buffington of Virginia Beach; a brother, Clark Buffington of Cranston, R.I.; a sister, Ruth Betty Baker of Louisville, Ky.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The Buffington family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 10, in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
