Kenneth John Fawcett Jr., 66, of the 2300 block of Barbour Road, died at Fairfax Hospital July 2, 1997, of cancer. He had been a resident of Fairfax County for the past 44 years.
Born in 1931 in Norfolk, he was a 1952 graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a B.S. degree in physics. He served as an officer on active duty with the Army Security Agency for two years and as a reserve for six additional years. He retired in December 1996 from MRJ Inc., where he was a member of the Technical Staff. Previous employers were Melpar, RCA, Scope Electronics and Miter. Kenneth Fawcett held three patents: Adaptive property filters, 1970; spectrum analyzer, wherein an analog wave form is sampled exponentially in time, 1970; and creation of random sequences for the cryptographic protection of communication, 1996.
He was an active member of Dulin United Methodist Church. He held many leadership positions in the church and was involved in the leadership of Boy Scout Troop 154 sponsored by the United Methodist Men. He served as a member of the sanctuary choir for 43 years. Mr. Fawcett was a member of Kemper Masonic Lodge No. 64, A.F. and A.M. of Fairfax County, Va., and a member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Alexandria. His hobbies included genealogy and duplicate bridge. He had been a life master of the American Contract Bridge League since 1973.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Audrey Dixon Fawcett; three sons and their wives, Kenneth John III and Patricia Ryan Fawcett of Hagerstown, Md., William Dixon and Cynthia Bowser Fawcett of Harrisonburg, Va., and Daniel Stephen and Kathryn Martin Fawcett of Springfield, Va.; a daughter and her husband, Anne Fawcett and G. Craig Kidd of Roanoke, Va.; and eight grandchildren, Luke Fletcher, Jacob Dixon, Kathleen Anne, Emily Marie, Elizabeth Patricia, Laura Christine, Daniel Stephen Fawcett and Thomas Eliot Kidd. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Fawcett Morris of Virginia Beach; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Virginia Brittingham of Norfolk; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth John Sr. and Betty Benn Fawcett of Norfolk.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Dulin United Methodist Church, 513 E. Broad St., Falls Church, led by the Rev. Wade Munford. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ives-Pearson Funeral Home, Falls Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund, Dulin United Methodist Church.
