A native of Pennsylvania, she was the widow of Leon W. VanDyke, and a loving wife and mother. Survivors include two sons, Leon W. VanDyke Jr. of Virginia Beach and Owen A. VanDyke II of Norfolk; two sisters, Dorothy Dominici of Wisconsin and Delores Gross of New Jersey; and a brother, Leo Malinowski of Texas.
