COA'S DR. CHOU RETIRES: Dr. Leland Chou, a music teacher at College of The Albemarle since 1981, announced his retirement effective July 31. Chou is a recipient of the 1995 Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service and has had a dramatic impact on cultural events in the Elizabeth City area over the last 16 years, including the creation of the Albemarle School of the Arts.

GATES COUNTY

PRESCRIBED BURNS PLANNED AT MERCHANTS MILLPOND: The Division of Parks and Recreation plans to conduct prescribed burns at Merchants Millpond State Park through September. According to Park Superintendent Dennis Helms, the specific dates of the burns will depend on weather conditions.

The burns will begin in the late morning and will end by late afternoon of the same day, allowing adequate time for cleanup before dark. For more information, contact the park office at 357-1191.

HARRELL NAMED: Randy Harrell, executive director of the Elizabeth City Pasquotank County Economic Developers Commission, was elected vice president at the North Carolina Economic Developers Association's annual meeting held June 22-24 in Atlantic Beach.
