Lyle Hawkins Pond, 79, a lifelong resident of Surry County and a retired farmer, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Mr. Pond was active in his church and community throughout his life. He was the son of the late John Wesley and Eva Edwards Pond. As a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, he served as a Sunday School teacher in the adult men's department, chairman of the administrative board, member of the board of trustees and assistant Sunday School superintendent. He was a past president of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and an active participant in the Wakefield Ruritan Shad Planking for many years. He was past master of Wakefield Masonic Lodge (NU)198, A.F.& A.M., and past district deputy grand master of the 30th district.
Mr. Pond served on the Surry County Planning Commission from 1965-1985, and chairman of the Surry County Board of Zoning Appeals from 1975-1985. He was past president of the Farm Bureau of Surry County.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Fraughnaugh Pond; a daughter, Susan Pond Gilbert of Pittsburgh; two sons, John Al Pond of Atlanta, David Lyle Pond of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren and a niece.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Rocky Hock United Methodist Church by the Rev. Randy Duncan. Burial with Masonic rites will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence on Rocky Hock Road, Wakefield.
