HAMPTON ROADS CRIME STATISTICS COMPARED TO NATIONAL AVERAGE

You keep publishing violent crime statistics for South Hampton Roads. I'd like to know the national statistics.

In 1995, there were 685 violent crimes per 100,000 people in the United States, according to the FBI. Preliminary FBI statistics indicate that violent crime fell 7 percent last year.

By comparison, there were 618 violent crimes per 100,000 people in South Hampton Roads in 1995, and violent crime dropped 8 percent in 1996.

A breakdown of violent crimes in 1995:

The national murder rate was 8 per 100,000; rape was 37 per 100,000; robbery was 221 per 100,000; and aggravated assault was 418 per 100,000.

The South Hampton Roads murder rate was 12 per 100,000; rape was 46 per 100,000; robbery was 313 per 100,000; and aggravated assault was 247 per 100,000. KEYWORDS: CRIME STATISTICS UNITED STATES HAMPTON ROADS
