MARIAN J. GATES

Marian Janssen Gates, 81, of the 1300 block of Willow Wood Drive, died July 2, 1997, in her residence.

Mrs. Gates was a native of Portsmouth and a lifelong resident of Chester, Va. She was the daughter of the late Peter Andrew and Millicent Munro Janssen, and the widow of Earle Carlton Gates, M.D.

She was an active member of Chester United Methodist Church in Chester, and a former member of its Altar Guild. She attended Blackstone College for Girls. Mrs. Gates was a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 25 years; a member of the Alumnae Association with Blackstone College for Girls; and a former member of the Chester Women's Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Marian Gates Breeden of Norfolk and Jacqueline Gates Richardson of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Mildred Janssen Maddux of Newport News; a brother, Carl Andrew Janssen Sr. of Williamsburg; six grandchildren, Edward L. Breeden IV of Richmond, Lucius H. Breeden of Norfolk, James J. Breeden of Virginia Beach, Carlton B. Dietz of Glen Allen, William McF. Richardson of Norfolk and Andrew F. Richardson of Aurora, Colo.; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Chester, by the Rev. P. Edward Leonard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, Chester, Va. 23831. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
