AREA ATHLETES VIE WITH STATE'S FINEST

Five Chesapeake athletes will be among those on display at the Virginia High School Coaches Association all-star games, which will be held this week in Hampton and Norfolk.

James Boyd and Jennifer Burns of Indian River, Cory Bauswell of Western Branch and Arnie Powell and George Miller of Deep Creek are the locals who were selected for the games, which are for graduated seniors only.

Boyd, Miller and Powell will play in Thursday's football game at Darling Stadium, Burns will take part in Tuesday's girls volleyball game at Hampton University's Holland Hall while Bauswell will participate in Wednesday's baseball game at Old Dominion.

The VHSCA also sponsors all-star games in boys and girls basketball, boys soccer and softball, but no Chesapeake players were chosen for those games.

For Boyd, the all-star game will be old hat. Last weekend the Penn State-bound defensive back played in a national all-star game in Orlando. Boyd, the Abe Goldblatt Award winner as South Hampton Roads' best football player last fall, led Indian River to an unbeaten regular season. He was in on 116 tackles, including 17 sacks, blocked seven kicks, made four interceptions and recovered three fumbles.

Powell, the All-Tidewater quarterback, completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 786 yards and nine touchdowns. He has signed with East Carolina.

Miller, a two-time All-Tidewater pick at linebacker, averaged 10 tackles a game, intercepted five passes and recovered four fumbles. He will try to make the team at Virginia Tech as a walk-on.

Bauswell, an All-Tidewater catcher headed to Virginia Commonwealth University on a baseball scholarship, batted .471 with 30 RBIs and four home runs. He threw out 50 percent of the runners who tried to steal on him.

Burns, a member of the All-Tidewater volleyball team, was a dominating player with her front-line spiking and defensive skill. Burns had 27 service aces and made 57 digs. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
