TRIO WILL BE COMPETING AGAINST STATE'S FINEST

Three June graduates of Suffolk high schools will participate in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Games in Hampton this week.

Lakeland's Darius Bryant will compete in the football game Thursday while schoolmate Damon Tillery will play in the basketball contest Monday and Nansemond River's Angie Gatling will play in the softball game Wednesday.

``It's a great honor for Angie, especially since she did not play last year,'' Warriors softball coach Jerry Varacallo said of Gatling.

Gatling, a second-team all-state pick for Group AA as a sophomore, missed her basketball, volleyball and softball seasons as a junior because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament. She started for the Eastern Region qualifying basketball team this year, earned first-team all-conference in volleyball and hit .395 to make first-team all-district in softball.

According to Varacallo, Gatling has not decided whether she will attend South Carolina State or Norfolk State in the fall.

Tillery, who guided the Cavaliers to the Group AA championship final as a junior, was named first-team all-Southeastern District this season. He was the area's fourth-leading scorer at more than 19 points a game and plans to attend Tyler (Texas) Junior College in the fall.

Bryant, the state Group AA defensive player of the year as a junior, earned first-team All-Tidewater honors this season. He led the team with 91 tackles, 60 unassisted, and recorded six sacks. He will attend North Carolina State on a football scholarship.

Each of the athletes were nominated for the all-star games by their coaches. A committee of coaches made the final selections.
