DUTCH PORTRAIT'S WITH A VIRGINIA HERITAGE

ILLUSTRATION:

PHOTO COURTESY OF HARPER AND ROWE PUBLISHERS INC.

Two of the large collection of family portraits by Dutch masters

of the ``Golden Age'' were brought from Holland to lower Norfolk

County, Va., in 1649. On the left is William Moseley (c.1606-1655),

an English merchant, long established in Rotterdam prior to coming

to Virginia. He was the original owner of the portraits and the

ancestor of the Moseley family of Virginia. To the right is his

wife, Susanna Moseley (1585-1656). The Moseley portraits, ``one of

the sights to be seen in Norfolk'' for many years, were sold during

the late 19th century to a Philadelphia collector. Their present

location is unknown. The photographs of the portraits of Moseley and

his wife were made prior to the sale.
