ECSU RECEIVES GRANT: The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Inc. approved a $50,000 grant to Elizabeth City State University to implement the Northeastern North Carolina Communications Skills Enhancement Program.
The program is for potential education majors who require a strong background in communication skills. Funded for one year, the project will help up to 50 economically and socially disadvantaged students with communication skills needed at the college level.
Dr. Claudie J. Mackey, professor in the Division of Education at ECSU, originated the proposal and will serve as the project director.
KILL DEVIL HILLS
LIONS MEMBER RECEIVES HONOR: John Miller III of Kill Devil Hills was honored recently with the Melvin Jones award at the North Carolina State Lions convention held in New Bern.
The award is the highest a member can achieve. It is named after the founder of the Lions Club, which, with 1.4 million members, is the largest service organization worldwide.
Miller is a member of the Nags Head club, a past governor of district 31-J, N.C. Lions state chairman for Camp Dogwood and serves on a state commission for the blind.
