Frances Congleton Curtis, 75, died Saturday July 12, 1997, in a local hospital. Mrs. Curtis, a native of Hampton, was the widow of Harold Vincent Curtis.
Throughout her life she was an active community leader and volunteer. She was very involved in the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs, where she served as past president of the Northampton Woman's Club, the Woman's Club of Accomack County, and the Cape Henry Woman's Club. Her club work continued and she later served as president of the Tidewater District. She also served on the State Board as public affairs chairmen of the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs. Other volunteer activities included: member of the Virginia Beach Community Service Board and a member of the State and City Crime Prevention Steering Committees. Mrs. Curtis was past president of the Democratic Woman's Club of Virginia Beach, a member of the Democratic City Committee and served for many years as a chief election offical.
Additional community activities included; member of the Committee of Juvenile Justice Advocates, member of the Board of Directors for the Russell House, Virginia Beach Unit of the American Cancer Society, and Virginia Easter Seal Board.
A founding member of the Church of the Holy Family, Mrs. Curtis also served on the Parish Council. She was a member of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond Commission for Older Adults, and a member of the Catholic Charities Board.
She is survived by her three children, Harold V. ``Skip'' Curtis Jr. and his wife, Vicky, Ann Kay Curtis Walters and her husband, Steve, and W. Keith Curtis and his wife, Kim; three grandchildren, Dustin M. Walters, Jeremy K. Walters, Brittany A. Curtis of Virginia Beach; and a sister, Katie Congleton Scott of Newport News.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. today in the Church of the Holy Family by Father Richard Mooney and Monsignor William Pitt. The family will receive friends in the church today from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The procession to the cemetery will begin at the Church of the Holy Family at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 1997 to Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery located on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach.
