BEYER STAYS AHEAD OF GILMORE IN RAISING FUNDS DURING JUNE

Democrat Don Beyer kept slightly ahead of Republican Jim Gilmore in fund-raising during June as the campaigns for governor stayed on a record spending pace, according to the latest finance reports.

Beyer collected $805,000 to Gilmore's $646,000 last month, according to reports filed Tuesday with the State Board of Elections.

To date, the two candidates have brought in a combined $9.3 million. They continue to close in on the $16 million record set in the 1989 campaign for governor by Democrat L. Douglas Wilder and Republican Marshall Coleman. Beyer had raised $4.9 million and had $2.5 million on hand as of June 30, the last day of the reporting period. Gilmore had raised $4.4 million and had $2.2 million on hand.
