BARBARA G. SPENCER

Barbara Gainey Spencer, 67, died at her home July 16, 1997, after an extended illness.

Born in Goldsboro, Mrs. Spencer had been a resident of Ocracoke for 11 years. She was a renowned artist and author, painting and sculpting in New York City, Belgium, India, Egypt and the Canary Islands. She served as a trustee on the board of directors of the Ocracoke Preservation Society. Her contributions to the Preservation Society Museum greatly benefited its early success. Her personal local art collection is on display in the Spencer Gallery at the Museum.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace T. Spencer; three sisters, Betty Flowers of Safety Harbor, Fla., Shirley Daulton of Newport News, Dorothy Casey of Raleigh; a brother, Coy Gainey of Raleigh; nieces and nephews and many loving friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ocracoke Child Care, P.O. Box 284, Ocracoke, N.C. 27960. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
