Sarah ``Sadie'' Powers Hughes, 84, the widow of William H. Hughes of Maryland Avenue, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in Harbour Pointe Medical Rehabilitation Centre after a short illness.
She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she served as the church's communion stewart for 40 years and was honored and presented with a plaque for this service; member of Western Branch Senior Citizens Club; and she held many stations in the Woodman of the World.
She was born in Windfall, N.C., to Sarah Spivey Powers and David C. Powers, but was a lifelong resident of Virginia. She is survived by three daughters, Roegean Ripley Speight and her husband, Emory B. Speight of Portsmouth, Lois Yandle and her husband, James of Chesapeake, Nancy H. Barkley and her husband, Frank ``Buddy'' of Suffolk; a sister, Myrtle Hewitt of Virginia Beach; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; special friend Levi Goard; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Loving Funeral Home Chapel Churchland by the Rev. Vickie Siebert. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home and at 141 Broad St. at other times.
