GEORGE W. JOHNSON

The Rev. George Wiley Johnson, 88, of the 32000 block of Airport Drive, died July 20, 1997, in Louise Obici Hospital.

He was born in Elizabeth City and was pastor emeritus of Piney Grove Baptist Church, Franklin, where he retired 10 years ago after 41 1/2 years as pastor. He was also a member of the National Baptist Conference, Hampton Ministers Conference, Bethany Baptist Association, Southeast Missionary Baptist Church Union and West Roanoke Association. He received numerous certificates of appreciation for service to the church, organizations and associations. He was the son of the late Lovia Johnson and George Wiley Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Isabella C. Johnson; a daughter, Barbara J. Wilson; a son, George W. Johnson Jr.; a sister, Bernice Stevenson; two brothers, George Gibson and Seward Gibson; and grandchildren, David N. Wilson, Cynthia Wiley, Brenda Johnson and George W. Johnson IV.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Piney Grove Baptist Church, Franklin, by the Rev. William A. Freeman. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
