Walter Cooper Joynes Jr., 87, of the 2300 block of Leeward Shore Drive, died July 23, 1997, in his residence.
Born and raised in Norfolk, Mr. Joynes was a retired treasurer with Lone Star Cement Corp. in Norfolk, Richmond and New York City for more than 41 years. After retirement he moved to Virginia Beach in 1969. He was a former member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norfolk where he served as a deacon, superintendent and treasurer of the Sunday School. He was also a former member of Briarcliff Congregational Church in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.
Mr. Joynes was a member of Corinthian Masonic Lodge 266, AF & AM, a past master and, prior to his death, the oldest living past master. He was affiliated with Briarcliff Masonic Lodge 1155 in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and was a former member of Khedive Temple and Scottish Rite Valley of Norfolk.
Mr. Joynes was preceded in death by his parents, Walter C. Joynes Sr. and Rosalind Cox Joynes; two brothers, Joseph and Leger Joynes; a sister, Maxine Owens; and a great-granddaughter, Cassidy Joynes.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mildred Bittle Joynes; two sons, Walter Cooper Joynes III, and his wife, Linda, of Norfolk, William A. Joynes and his wife, Christine, of Ossining, N.Y.; a sister, Rosalind Jennings of Norfolk; six grandchildren, Walter C. Joynes IV, April J. Edney and her husband, Jeffrey, Kirk R. Joynes, Kelly J. Passler and her husband, Mario, Jill Joynes, William A. Joynes Jr.; a great-granddaughter, Kirsten Passler; and many nieces and nephews.
A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m., July 26, 1997, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel, by the Rev. Warren Withrow. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.
