LOOK OUT FOR LANE CLOSINGS WHEN DRIVING HOLLAND ROAD

If you travel Holland Road at all, you'll likely see a lane or two closed for the next couple of weeks.

Work to mill (which is grinding down the asphalt that's already there) and repave Holland Road between Lynnhaven Parkway and Rosemont Road is taking place until around Aug. 4, weather permitting.

Crews will close one lane at a time both eastbound and westbound to get the job done. They'll be out there from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

The work is part of regularly scheduled maintenance.

Also, for those who are as confused as Road when it comes to figuring out what lane to be in when you're on the north side of Rosemont Road crossing over Virginia Beach Boulevard, relief is in sight.

Engineers say this is how the lanes work: the left turn lane and through lane has lane skips (or markers) that take you across the Boulevard to the left most lane of Rosemont.

The right turn and through lane drivers have the option of heading into the middle or right lane to get onto Route 44.

Anyhow, overhead signs are to be erected showing drivers just where they need to be and where each lane will take them.

SNARLS OF THE WEEK

The following people called Road's INFOLINE number with their complaints.

Bill Foss, Kings Grant.Regarding the recent ``I'll work for food'' item: A couple of winters ago, on a really cold day, I noticed a man holding a, ``I will work for food'' sign on Virginia Beach Boulevard. I felt sorry for him and went home and gathered up a bag of food. When I offered him the food he refused to accept it, saying he couldn't carry it. I learned a lesson that day but I'm not sure what it was. Thank you.

RW: You should have asked him if he'd take a third-party, out-of-state check for $20. Bet that wouldn't be too heavy to carry to the bank.

Teresa Joynes, Malibu. I wanted to comment on Bob Kelly's comment concerning the panhandlers on the corner of Rosemont Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard.

I watch an individual who stands there most of the time. I once watched a lady give this person a bag of food, which seemed to make him distressed.

That proves he's not standing there for food.

RW: Road has to admit that Road would be a little more sympathetic to someone asking for work for food if that person was 30 pounds underweight. But, lets face it. Some of these guys have more meat on their bones than Road.

Rosie, no address given. About Bob Kelly's comment about the homeless person. I agree it's a nuisance for him to stand there but, how dare you criticize his clothes?

You can get those brands in any thrift shop and sometimes high-quality brands of clothing can be donated to shelters.

The only thing you need to pick on him for is being a nuisance in the road. Don't pick on the quality of his clothes because he may be getting it free from the shelter or from a store itself.

RW: Criticize his clothing? Please. Road's only jealous because Road's can't afford new Nikes. Or any Nikes for that matter. How about ``will trade new shoes for food?''

Pat Beigay, Lynnhaven.I'm writing to warn motorist who are turning left from Magic Hollow Boulevard onto Lynnhaven to beware because some drivers are putting on their left turn blinkers and after the light changes instead of turning left onto Lynnhaven Parkway, they're signaling to turn into 7-Eleven. Seems to be a problem because people, out of common courtesy, think they're turning left and we were almost hit there.

Just wanted to warn people in Magic Hollow to be careful out there. Bye.

RW: Just goes to show you that even those who use their blinkers don't always know where they're going.

Carol Ford, no address given. I've never seen this addressed in your column. At the new shopping center, Salem Crossing on Salem Road, that parking lot entering and exiting is just a place waiting for hundreds of accidents.

Is there anything you can do about putting up stop signs, contacting somebody about that or even painting arrows for entering and exiting. Thanks an awful lot.

RW: Clue me in on to the exact problem. The entrance and exits aren't properly marked so people trying to turn take up the whole area? Or, is it too hard to make a turn to get out of the parking lot? Call Road back Carol and give more detail and then Road'll be happy to make a call or two about it.

Deb, Virginia Beach. There's a brand new traffic light at the intersection of London Bridge Extended and Dam Neck Road. There have been two serious accidents out there already because people don't know the red light's there.

I've seen those red light runners again. They're trying out the new intersection and they're doing a real good job running those light. They really do irritate me.

RW: Deb, there's a zillion signs out there that warn people of a new traffic pattern and signal. So, those drivers running the light are just playing ignorant.
