Alpine Martin Patterson, 76, of Lake Wales, Fla., and Virginia Beach, died July 26, 1997.
She was a native of Norfolk, the daughter of the late Howard Gresham Martin and Alpine Gatling Martin and the granddaughter of the late Alvah H. and Mary Tilley Martin, and the granddaughter of the late George and Mary Hallowell Gatling. Mr. Alvah Martin was the founder of the Merchants and Planters Bank which was one of the predecessors of Nations Bank.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Eugene Ferree Patterson; two daughters, Brooke Patterson Mahlstedt of San Diego, Calif. and Fay Patterson Bullitt of Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Douglas and Andrew Mahlstedt, Christian and Susan Brooke Bullitt; and one sister, Fay Martin Chandler of Cambridge, Mass.
She was a graduate of Maury High School and Sweet Briar College, Class of 1941. During World War II, she served in the Red Cross Motor Corps. She and her husband moved to Puerto Rico in 1950. She served as the first woman president of the Orchid Society of Puerto Rico and was one of the first judges of the American Orchid Society on the island. She was an avid golfer and was on the Puerto Rican Girl Scout Council.
They moved to Virginia Beach in 1974, and she served on the auxiliary board of Virginia Beach General Hospital and was a member of the Garden Club and the Navy League.
She was a member of Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, where a funeral service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Mark Delcuze. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A reception following the services will be held at the P.A.C.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bok Towers Gardens, Lake Wales, Fla. 33853. H.D.
