PORTSMOUTH GALLERIES, SHOPS PLAN EVENTS

ALL OF THE public and private art galleries and antique and collectibles shops on High Street in Olde Towne will open Aug. 3 for First Sunday in Portsmouth, a regular monthly occasion for art openings and special lectures. The venues:

Portsmouth Community Arts Center: Philip Sugden, an artist whose work is featured in ``Visions From the Fields of Merit'' in the main gallery, will give a slide lecture at 2 p.m. in which he will discuss his travels to Tibet and the Himalayas and the symbolism in his work. In addition, the center will present a slide show, ``The Last Dance at Drigung Dundro, the Tibetan Sky Burial.'' Also on exhibit at the center will be ``Between Living and Dreaming,'' a collection of works by Timothy McClellan of Norfolk.

Art Atrium II Gallery: ``Faces of Africa,'' a collection of 22 papier-mache masks by Henry Elliott will open Saturday with a 4 p.m. gallery talk by Elliott followed by a reception. The formal opening will follow from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Known as ``the Mask Maker,'' Elliott lives and works in Washington, D.C. Art Atrium II, 629 High St., open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Olde Towne Gallery: ``Special Fare for the Arts,'' a selection of works from a private collection ``representing mixed media, mixed impressions and mixed prices.'' Opening reception is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, at the corner of High and Court streets, is open every day but Monday.

Visual Arts Center of Tidewater Community College: ``Another First: Art Faculties From Community Colleges Showing Together for the First Time,'' work by 43 teachers in 13 community colleges across the state. The galleries are on the first floor of the center at the corner of High and Court streets and are open free to the public every day.

Prison Square Courtyard: Repairs and estimates of silver by representatives of local antique dealers, noon to 4 p.m. Corner of High and Dinwiddie streets.

Potrafka Gallery: New works of handmade paper and drawings by Diana Davenport of Portsmouth. Open 2 to 5 p.m. Corner of High and Effingham streets.

WesTreasures: African watercolor images by Benjamin Agbenyegah of Ghana. Open 2-5 p.m. 325 High St.

ENTERTAINMENT: Amy Ferebee, vocals and guitar, 600 block stage on High Street; Henry Johnson Trio, Courtyard of 1846 Courthouse at High and Court streets; Gospelrama at Portside.
