JOSEPH A. JAAP

Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Joseph Abraham Jaap, 88, died Monday, July 28, 1997.

A native of Englewood, Colo., he spent several tours of duty in Norfolk and Washington, D.C., and retired in Seattle. Adm. Jaap graduated from the Naval Academy in 1932 and served as an aviator in World War II, where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Legion of Merit. He commanded the USS Coral Sea and served as a carrier division commander and as fleet air commander at Whidbey Island, Wash.

Adm. Jaap was predeceased by his wife, Frances Davies Jaap in 1987. He is survived by his sister, Sister Frances Elizabeth Jaap of St. Louis, Mo.; two children, Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Joseph D. Jaap, SC, of Norfolk and Dr. Anne J. Jacobson of Houston; four grandchildren, Mary Frances J. Bellman, Rowena J. Post, Joseph D. Jaap Jr. and Peter A.F. Jacobson.

A funeral Mass and burial with full military honors will take place Saturday, Aug. 2, in Bellevue, Wash. Greens Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please acknowledge a special charity. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
