JEAN J. CARTER

Jean Johnston Carter, 79, of the 5500 block of Atlantic Avenue, died July 30, 1997, in her home.

Mrs. Carter was born Aug. 22, 1917, in Evington, Va. She was the daughter of the late John and Emma Johnston. She attended nursing school at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and graduated in 1940. Mrs. Carter was a nurse at the Hercules Powder Plant where she met Dr. Edward P. Ambrose Jr. and married in 1942. They resided in Radford, Va., until Dr. Ambrose's death in 1979. She moved to Virginia Beach in 1979 and met Joseph A. Carter Sr. and married in 1987.

Mrs. Carter was a very active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Radford, Va., and at Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. She was a member of Kings Daughters and the Audubon Society. Mrs. Carter was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph A. Carter Sr.; a son Edward P. Ambrose Jr. of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Margaret A. Barton of Missoula, Mont.; a stepson, Joseph A. Carter Jr.; a sister, Lucille Leishman; five grandchildren, Ingrid A. Madsen, G. Cameron Ambrose-Smallwood, Sarah B. Ambrose, Brooke J. Ambrose, Elizabeth P. Ambrose; and two step-grandchildren, Mary Grace Carter and Joseph A. Carter III.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Aug. 2, 1997, at Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach by the Rev. Russell Burchard and the Rev. Calvin G. Gardner. Burial will follow at the Columbarium.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 5506 Atlantic Ave.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, the American Cancer Society or to the At Home Hospice Care.
