GEORGE S. WIMBISH

George Scott Wimbish, 83, a resident of Chesapeake, passed away quietly at his home on the morning of July 29, 1997, after a long illness.

Mr. Wimbish was a native of Raleigh, N.C., where he received his formal education from Crosby-Garfield Elementary, Washington High School and his B.S. degree in mathematics and French from St. Augustine's College.

He taught mathematics and science in Selma, Ala., at Selma University for two years. He then moved to Norfolk, where he worked at the Norfolk Naval Air Station, retiring after 31 years of service as quality control inspector. During this time, he also taught Adult Education (mathematics) at Crestwood High's night school.

Mr. Wimbish had been a member of the First Baptist Church, Crestwood, for more than 40 years, where he was a member of the trustee board, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the board of Christian Education and the Brotherhood. He was also clerk and financial secretary for more than 35 years.

The youngest of 11 children, Mr. Wimbish was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Wimbish, and nine of his siblings.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mrs. Della P. Wimbish; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara W. Newby; a granddaughter, Mrs. Tomia N. Kornegay ahd her husband, Mr. D. Tracy Kornegay; a great-grandson, Christopher Kornegay; a brother, Mr. Matthew P. Wimbish; a goddaughter, Mrs. Paula Baker; a niece, Mrs. Louise Cason; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Frieda P. Rapelyea and Mrs. Esther P. Newkirk; brothers and sisters-in-law also include Mr. and Mrs. Norlington Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Perry and Dr. and Mrs. J.A. Bayer; and many other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at First Baptist Church, Crestwood by Fr. Arceleous Elliott. The body will lie in state at the church at 11 a.m. The interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Gardens. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
