BOWERS NAMED HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR: David G. Bowers was named director of human resources for Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. He was the human resources manager for Leitch Inc. in Chesapeake.
DUDLEY LEAVES LAW FIRM; NEVIN NAMED OF COUNSEL: William L. Dudley Jr., a partner with Knight, Dudley, Clarke & Dolph, has left the firm to become commissioner of the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission in Richmond. The firm's name will change to Knight, Clarke, Dolph & Rapaport. In addition, John S. Nevin, formerly a partner with the Baltimore/Delaware/Washington, D.C. firm of Semmes, Bowen & Semmes, was named counsel to the firm. He will concentrate in civil litigation and workers' compensation, state and maritime.
ALLEN NAMED EMPLOYMENT MANAGER FOR NEWSPAPER: Lisa Montgomery Allen was named employment manager for the human resources department at The Virginian-Pilot. Prior to this, she was staffing and development manager, human resources, at The Daily Press, where she implemented a companywide development training strategy, and developed and implemented the company's first mentoring program.
PORTSMOUTH
CITY GAINS ENERGY-COST SAVINGS: The city of Portsmouth and Evantage, a division of Virginia Power, have finished energy management upgrades that will cut the city's energy bill by at least $90,000 a year, according to Evantage. The city will also save on lower maintenance costs as a result of equipment improvements. The work included the installation of energy management controls in eight buildings and installing energy-efficient boilers. The city said the project did not require the spending of out-of-pocket cash - the cost of the work will be recouped in energy savings.

STRICKLAND & ASSOCIATES ACQUIRES HAMPTON ACCOUNTING FIRM: Strickland & Associates of Norfolk acquired the Hampton certified public accounting firm of Powell & Associates. The name of the acquired firm has been changed to Strickland & Associates. The firm is located at 100 Bridge St.

NEWPORT NEWS SHIPYARD GETS $175 MILLION FOR CARRIER JOB: The Navy awarded Newport News Shipbuilding an additional $174.7 million for the overhaul of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt. The Roosevelt arrived in the shipyard July 8 for the yearlong overhaul. Work will include underwater repairs, hull painting, rudder work, and work related to the carrier's reactors. The new contract adds to funds the Peninsula shipyard has received for the Roosevelt overhaul.

MEDIA GENERAL DECLARES QUARTERLY DIVIDEND: Media General Inc. in Richmond declared a quarterly dividend of 13 cents per share on common stock, payable Sept. 15, 1997, to stockholders of record on Aug. 29, 1997.
