Billfishing was good Thursday northeast of Oregon Inlet. Fifty white marlin were hooked and released by charters fishing between the 40900 and the 41000 Loran lines.
Releases included five white marlin by the Gannet, four white marlin each by the Outer Limits and the Fish'N'Frenzy, three white marlin by the Sea Toy and two white marlin by the Capt. B.C.
No offshore action was reported off Hatteras because of sea conditions, but half-day charters trolling in the Hatteras Inlet area reported good Spanish mackerel fishing.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was fair, with scattered bluefish taken. Headboats in the area caught small croaker, pigfish and a few keeper trout.
Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow.
A few croaker and a few keeper flounder were taken on Kitty Hawk Pier.
Avalon Pier reported several keeper flounder landed during the day. A 64-pound cobia also was decked by Raymond Darden of Franklin, Va.
Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught a few croaker, bluefish and small flounder.
A few bluefish and flounder were taken on Jennette's Pier. A 25-pound jack was released.
Some bluefish were caught during the morning from Outer Banks Pier. Scattered spot and sea mullet were taken during the afternoon.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported quite a few spot and croaker landed during the morning, but afternoon action was slow.
Small croaker were taken on Avon Pier throughout the day.
A 19-pound king mackerel, a 45-pound cobia, a few pompano, some bluefish and scattered mackerel were landed from Frisco Pier.
Surf fishermen landed small bottom fish along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet and around Oregon Inlet Thursday.
A few bottom fish were taken by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton, but sloppy surf kept action to a minimum.
Small bluefish and croaker were taken at Cape Point and a few keeper flounder were beached near the lighthouse.
Plenty of small bluefish were landed in the Hatteras Inlet area Wednesday night. Spanish mackerel were taken in the area Thursday morning.
Pompano fishing should be good at Hatteras when seas fall and the water clears.
The water temperature was 75 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.
