HAMPTON CUP REGATTA SET FOR 71ST YEAR OF COMPETITION

The 71st running of the Hampton Cup Regatta, the nation's oldest powerboat race, is expected to draw between 100 and 120 inboard and hydroplane racing craft to Mill Creek Friday through Sunday.

The races have been run every year since 1926.

Mill Creek is adjacent to Fort Monroe near the Hampton end of the Interstate 64 Bridge Tunnel across Hampton Roads. Access to the race site is from Exit 268 and across the Mercury Boulevard Bridge. Admission will be free and the site offers ample space for parking.

Eleven classes will compete, with big, powerful Grand Prix hydroplanes, capable of speeds in excess of 140 mph, racing on the 1 1/4-mile oval for the first time in 20 years. Most other popular hydro classes also will compete.

Competition will begin at noon each day, with elimination heats Friday and Saturday followed by the finals Sunday.

Weekend festivities will also include live music, food and drink concessions, boating exhibits and special activities for young people. Proceeds will benefit the Hampton Race Against Drugs.

Additional details are available from: Hampton Visitors Center, 727-1102.
