William Harry Norris Jr., 86, a Norfolk educator, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, in Palm Bay, Fla.
He was the son of Mrs. George Richardson Norris and William H. Norris Sr. of Norfolk, both deceased.
He held degrees from George Washington University and the University of Pennsylvania. At Maury High School he taught classes in English, German and mathematics, leaving in 1955 as Chairman of the Department of Mathematics to become supervisor of secondary education for the Norfolk Secondary Schools. In 1974 he retired as director of staff development and student teaching.
He taught extension courses for the University of Virginia, the College of William and Mary and Old Dominion University. In the Norfolk Evening School he taught shorthand and later was in charge of the Americanization program sponsored by the evening school and the National Council of Jewish Women. In 1959-60 he served as chairman of the Maryland/District of Columbia/Virginia section of the Mathematical Association of America.
He was also a member of the Modern Language Association of America, the Medieval Academy of America, the Early English Text Society, the British Museum Society, the International Arthurian Society, the Chrysler Museum, and various educational and social organizations.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Jean N. Daniels of Palm Bay, Fla.; a niece, a nephew and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the family lot in Cedar Grove Cemetery. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
