VIRGINIA BEACH - Shirley Berry Smith, 68, of the 1600 block of Westerfield Road, died Aug. 3, 1997.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Norfolk and a resident of Virginia Beach for the past 37 years. She was the daughter of Richard E. Berry and Ruth L. Hart Berry. She was a graduate of Granby High School's class of 1947. She was a member of Baylake United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, and was also a lifelong member of Park Place Baptist Church. She also was a former longtime member of The Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Local Chapter.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Earl Smith; two daughters, Patricia Smith Herbster and her husband, Edward G. Herbster of Black Mountain, N.C., and Kristin Smith-Crutchfield and her husband, J. Mark Crutchfield of Virginia Beach; a son, David E. Smith of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Megan and Darlene; a cousin, Jean Cheatham of Winter Park, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law and their families; and also a very dear friend, Phyllis I. Carroll of Virginia Beach.

A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel by the Rev. Ted E. David. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Lung Association or The American Heart Association.
