ROMIE STOKES JR.

Romie ``Romeo'' Stokes Jr., 48, of the 4000 block of Old Virginia Road, died Aug. 3, 1997, on U.S. Highway 301, Fayetteville, N.C.

He was a native of Emporia, Va. and a member of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Mr. Stokes was a conductor for Norfolk Southern Railroad for more than 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Dianette G. Stokes; two daughters, Nannette Adelle and Tia Marie, both of Chesapeake; his mother, Eugenia Stokes of Portsmouth; sisters, Delois (Bill) Saddler of Pennsylvania, Rosa (Alton) Banks of Maryland, Alma (former husband, James Bazemore) of Chesapeake, Lillian (Ben) Williams and Barbara Stokes, all of Portsmouth; a brother, Frederick (Jean) Stokes of Portsmouth; a grandchild, Drew Simione of Chesapeake; an aunt, Mary Lee of Hampton; an uncle, Chaney Stokes of Newport News; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-law and friends including two special friends, Herbert Hall and Robert Davis. He was predeceased by his father, Romie Stokes Sr. and two sisters, Jean Hawthorne and Jannette Andrews.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Raymond Dean, the Rev. Byron Collins and the Rev. J.J. Ferguson. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon Friday. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
