Forget regional flag

I don't know why we need a regional flag to attract tourism. As Mr. Babcock, chairman of the Regional Identity Task Force stated in an article in this paper on July 31, ``I wouldn't expect anyone in Europe to recognize our flag; it would have mostly local significance.''

Well if it only has local significance then why do it? I am sure that most people in this area know that we are called Hampton Roads and don't need a flag to prove that; they know that. If you want people to visit this area, then do positive things to draw them in.

In another unrelated article on July 31, there is mention of putting in an expressway through Chesapeake to move people to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. What do we want, to keep visitors here or help them get to North Carolina?

I have seen the signs in Virginia Beach at the beach with the list of restrictions. I have also witnessed the cruising law there. Want to bring more people in? Lighten up! You can't have it both ways. Face it, Virginia Beach would be the big draw in this area because of the beachfront. The only other major draw would be Williamsburg because of Busch Gardens and Water Country USA and maybe the colonial district. But there is little else in between that tourists know about. If you think differently, then do like Myrtle Beach and put out an information packet of the entire area, get a web page, and advertise heavier.

As I have often heard in business, You have to spend money to make money.

Saddlehorn Dr. Thanks, Council

The following is a copy of a letter I sent to the Chesapeake City Council and Mayor Ward.

Dear Sirs and Madam:

As president of the Greater South Norfolk Business Consortium and as a member of the South Norfolk Leadership Council, I wish to take this opportunity to thank you in your efforts on our behalf concerning the ESI (Richmond-based Environmental Solutions Inc.) trash terminal.

I feel that I can speak for everyone when I say that the speed with which you reacted after you discovered the citizens' ire when this was sprung on us was commendable.

Please continue to deny this use, which is detrimental to all of Chesapeake.

Sincerely,

Leo F. Johns

Greater South Norfolk Business Consortium Breaking the rules

I have a complaint about businesses along Bainbridge Boulevard that don't follow the right-of-way, zoning law concerning items placed near the sidewalk.

Several businesses continue to bring stuff out where they shouldn't be, making it difficult for businesses that follow the rules.

I am a business owner along Bainbridge Boulevard and I am sick and tired of those businesses that make it difficult for all the honest businesses.
