Catherine McPherson Thomas died Aug. 5, 1997.
The daughter of Anderson J. and Emma Woods McPherson, she was born in Portsmouth May 12, 1904. She attended Woodrow Wilson High School, Portsmouth, where she was captain of the women's basketball team and then the University of North Carolina Women's College at Greensboro. After leaving college, she began a lifelong interest in the Y.W.C.A., working at the Norfolk Y.W.C.A. until her marriage to George B. (Jack) Thomas in 1933, a happy marriage that lasted 63 years until his death in January of this year. She continued her connection with the Y.W.C.A. in the 1940s and the 1950s, being at various times director for the Y's summer Camp Owaissa for girls, director of Y-teen activities and president of the board of the Norfolk Y.W.C.A. She lived with her husband in Norfolk until 1991, when they moved to Charlottesville to live with their son's family. <
She is mourned by her son, George B. Thomas of Charlottesville; her daughter, Anne T. Thomas of Riverside, Calif.; her daughter-in-law, Sally Thomas; son-in-law, Ron McCoy; grandchildren, Alison Hall, Jon Hall, David Hall, Laura Thomas and Nancy Thomas; great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Katherine; and cousins.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Monticello Memorial Gardens. Hill and Wood Funeral Service, Charlottesville, is in charge. KEYWORDS: OBITUARY DEATH
